We sometimes call this "Re-Imaging", "reimage", or "Imaging" a computer. This process erases everything on the computer, and re-installs Windows so that you have a fresh start.

Teacher Devices: Backup your files, if possible

Skip this step if it's a student device since students' files should all be in OneDrive.

Make sure everything that you need to keep is stored in the folder "OneDrive - Living Sky School Division". You can open the "File Explorer" and look at through your files this way to make sure.

So if you have any important documents such as word files that are on your Desktop, copy these to your "OneDrive - Living Sky School Division" folder before you re-image.

I usually check under "This PC" and check these two folders to make sure I have everything I need backed up beforehand: "Desktop", "Documents" & "Downloads". If files are here and not stored in your OneDrive, they will be gone forever if you re-image without saving them somewhere else first. Ignore if they are not important. Move to if you'd like to keep the files.

Make sure you are signed into Chrome if you wish to have bookmarks and add-ons come with you (it should say your name or chrome user icon in the top right corner. )
- If it's "paused", you'll need to click it and re-sign in to sync it again.
Make sure your offline files are synced:
- Check your taskbar (in the bottom right corner beside the time), check to see if you have an icon like this:
- If you do, click that and sync all files. If it finds a file that has been modified and if it does not know which of the two you'd like to keep, it will ask you.

The first thing that the imaging process does is erase all files on your computer.

Re-imaging

Take the computer to the imaging station at your school

The computer needs to be plugged into a network cable. Each school has a dedicated spot for imaging, with a spare network cable and power cord.

Turn on the computer, and press F12 while it is starting

When you see the Dell or HP logo, start pressing F12 repeatedly. This is easy to miss, because it has to be pressed at exactly the right time. If you've missed it, reboot and try again.

If you see a "Windows" logo, it's too late, and you should reboot and try again.

Select Network Boot

You should see a list of boot devices - you want to boot from the network. This might be named differently, depending on the model of computer you have.

Some common names are:

Network
Onboard Network Controller
Onboard NIC

If you don't see any of the above,

If you see a message "It looks like you started an upgrade.."

This message can be a bit deceiving if you don't read carefully. You'll want to select No because you do want to do a clean installation.

If it stops with a message about a "Pending Request", contact the Help Desk for assistance

This means that the computer hasn't been through our Imaging process before, and we need to set it up in our system.

If you're computer stops here, IT staff will need to "Approve" the request in our system before it can continue.

Generally, this only has to happen once per computer, for the lifetime of that computer.

Log into the computer and wait for it to install Windows and extra software

It's best to leave the laptop for at least an hour, to give it time to install the extra software that it needs after Windows is installed.

Once you see the log in screen, you should log in. The first time you log in, it's normal to take 5 or 10 minutes to log in. At this point, you won't see much of the software on here yet.

If you leave it for a few hours, it should install the software center and required updates. To get this process started faster, you can tell the computer to look for updates as follows:

Click the 'Start' button > the 'Settings' gear > 'Update & Security' > 'Check for updates' and then leave it for a while.

This should jump start the process. Usually after a few minutes (but could take longer), more icons like the software center start showing up on the computer.

Wait for the rest of the software and updates to show up

Some desktop icons will eventually show up including Chrome & software center. Some pop ups should appear asking you to reboot at some point, which you should do.

Here are a few things you may want to do after it has re-imaged:

Open Chrome and Sign into the browser with your LSKYSD account in order to copy your Bookmarks.
Pin Outlook to your taskbar so you can easily access your email by following these steps
Set up Outlook: Just open it and click Next a few times and wait for it to finish setting up. This process may take a long time, somewhere around 20-40 minutes in some cases.
