Copying a Topic from One Course to Another

Copying a Topic from One Course to Another

Say you want to move your Teacher Materials section to another class since you want a copy of it there as it applies to two courses.

You can do this by using the Import feature. It's a bit of work to do, but these are the steps. It will basically add the learning activities and you may need to move them after to their own topic.

(Note: Keep in mind - the import feature only cares about the topic number)

The course import function only cares about restoring activities from a section/topic in the original course into a section/topic in the destination course based on the topics' order in the list. So, for example, activities from the 3rd topic in the original course would be restored into the 3rd topic in the target course, regardless of their name.

Let's start with this course. Say we want to put Teacher Materials in here.

Click the Gear on the top right corner to open the administration menu. Select Import.

Find your course by searching for key words to narrow it down. This might be confusing to choose the right one since there have been copies over the years in some cases. (Note: if you are in your course in another window, you can click the gear at the top and click Edit Settings and find the exact name of the course to determine which course to import from:

Select the course which has the materials you want to bring over.

I would leave default settings as it seems like that's what you want - all blocks/files, etc, but no student data.

Click Next, not jump to final step.

Click None - we want to only select the section we want to copy over - not importing the whole course.

Individually check all the boxes for only the things you want to move:

The next screen is confirmation on what parts you are importing. Click Next after you checked to make sure it's doing what you had in mind.

After the import is complete, it will append the content to the sections - if Teacher Materials was the 11th topic, check your 11th topic and you'll notice all the learning activities have been added.

This won't change the name of the topic - so it might look like it didn't work at first until you go in and see the content has been added.

Since "Teacher Materials" in the Psychology course was the 9th topic in Psychology, all the Teacher materials are added onto the end of the 9th in my comp science test course:

You can then move them to a new topic to separate them.

How I would do this is create a new topic/section "Teacher Materials"

Use the arrow buttosn to move the learning items:

step 1:

Step 2:

step 3:

Do this for the remaining items - move them to the new section.
